Alpha Male and a sledgehammer

My husband is a perfectionist. Anal retentive is putting it mildly. Always has been, always will be. He does beautiful work from hand-stacking the gorgeous rock walls (with rocks that he found in the woods around our house) that line our property, to our enormous mahogany deck, to the tile and hardwood floors throughout our house, painting every room and handling every plumbing, electrical, and installation that needs to be done around the house. And never, ever, ever in the twenty plus years that we've been together has he ever asked--or accepted--help from anyone else. He doesn't hire out. Simply unheard of.

Which means his projects take forever to complete. This summer he's been fixing our deck door. We live on the top of a hill and have an amazing view of the white mountains, but it also means we have some crazy weather beating on the north side of the house. He's ripped the siding away and is working on replacing the trim, doorframe and door. And unfortunately it seems to always rain when he has a day off.

Not able to sit still for a minute and unable to work outside in the pouring rain, last weekend Hubby went out to the garage, found his sledgehammer and started attacking the kitchen floor. Apparently there was a little water damage to the subfloor by the door...which in Hubby's mind means we replace the entire kitchen floor.

One week later...one side of my kitchen doesn't have flooring. And we have yet to discuss flooring options. Hubby must research, investigate, study, process and then maybe, MAYBE by next summer he'll know what kind of floor to put in. And then it will take him a year to get it done because he won't ask for help.

But let me tell you, when the floor is done it will out last our grandchildren (our kids are 14, 11 and 9...we have a ways to go) and will be beautiful. In the meantime...don't walk barefoot around my house.

Comfort Food

I love summer. Love, love, LOVE it (primarily because I'm a teacher). Grilling, drinks on the patio, floating in the pool, beach trips, bike rides, laying out in the sun reading my TBR. And while I hate to see summer slipping through my fingers, Fall is a pretty awesome season as well.

Today's rain and cooler temperatures gave me an excuse to crank up the oven and dive into my baking cabinet. Every weekend during the fall and winter months the house smells like banana bread or apple pie or something chocolatey (yesterday it was homemade frosted brownies). And while I love to bake, I also like to cook. Tonight I made spinach stuffed shells. So delish. I can't wait to break out the crockpot and scroll through Pinterest and Allrecipes for more comfort food recipes.

Had to dig out the sweatpants as well. They're feeling super comfy cozy right now. Soon it will be time for fires in the fireplace.

But let's not rush things.
